Henry anchors Aussies to victory

A sensational anchor leg from Jodie Henry gave Australia victory in the women's 4X100 metres freestyle final at the World Swimming Championships at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Sunday evening.

Henry started almost a body length behind Kara Lyn Joyce of the United States, but a powerful final lap saw the Olympic and world individual champion overhaul her rival and touch the wall first.

The Australian quartet of Libby Lenton, Melanie Schlanger, Shayne Reese and Henry set a championship record of 3:35.48 with the US second (3:35.68) and the Netherlands (3:36.81) third.

The current world record holders Germany finished fourth.

Henry said she was not surprised by her ability to finish so strongly.

"I love coming from behind, I love chasing," she said. "I always give up a bit on the start, so I'm pretty used to having to chase people down."

Lenton said the victory had come as a surprise.

"We all swam just unbelievable and I don't think any of us believed we could actually win it tonight," she said.

'But we really had a gutsy swim and we went out there together as a team and we really fought as a team."

Lenton gave the Australians a flying start when she swam the lead-off leg in 53.42, the second fastest time in history, but the Americans were in front at the final changeover.

Henry made the turn at the 350m mark in second place before reeling in Joyce over the final 10m.

In the men's final, the US took gold in 3:12.72 with Italy second (3:14.04) and France third (3:14.68).

Australia finished fifth in 3:15.89.

Meanwhile, Laure Manaudou of France won the women's 400m freestyle final to successfully defend the title she won in Montreal two years ago.

Manaudou, 20, led from start to finish to win the gold in 4:02.61, the second-fastest time in history and just 0.48 outside the world record of 4:02.13 she set in Budapest last year.

Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland, the Olympic and world champion for 200m butterfly, was second in 4:04.23 while Japan's 800m freestyle champion Ai Shibata was third in 4:05.19.

Australia's Linda MacKenzie was eighth in 4:07.64.

Manaudou showed her rivals a clean pair of heels from the start, opening up a body length's lead on the first lap and racing through the first 300m under world record pace before fading on the last 100m.

She had entered nine events in Melbourne as part of a bold attempt to win an unprecedented number of gold medals but pulled out of the 200m individual medley heats on Sunday morning to cut her program to eight races.

In other results, Katie Hoff of the US led qualifying in the women's 200m individual medley with a time of 2:11.75.

Australian pair Stephanie Rice and Reese also qualified for the final with respective times of 2:12.54 and 2:14.10.

Another Australian, Brenton Rickard, moved through to the final of the men's 100m breaststroke after finishing second in his semi-final in 1:00.87.

Japan's Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima (1:00.05) and world record holder Brendan Hansen (1:00.13) of the US topped qualifying.

here's a question...

If you do a fastest ever split time, ie in your 100m leg you break the world record for 100m freestyle, why dont they count that as an individual record?

It only counts on the first leg, because the others aren't initiated by an official starter.
