The Colosseum has decided to take an unprecedented step for online forums of purchasing carbon credits to offset the CO2 the electricity generated to power our server.

The 2007 purchase was for a total of $47.30 and offsets the creation of 4.3 tones of CO2. This is equivalent to absorbing two years of Carbon Dioxide produced by a computer running for 2 years, 24 hours a day.

This purchase has seen a selection of native species being planted in the Macedon Ranges in Victoria (Australia).

2008's purchase was for $51 from http://www.greenfleet.com.au

As plants grow, they not only absorb CO2, a known greenhouse gas from the atmosphere, they also release oxygen for animals and humans to breathe.

Native plants also provide habitat, food and shelter for native Australian animals. Larger plant species also help reduce salinity, a major problem for our farmers by helping to lower the water table. All plants also reducing erosion of our precious top soil as their roots hold the dirt together.

The Colosseum also encourages its members to undertake their own initiatives to help protect our natural environment.

The Colosseum encourages our Members to undertake the following:

Computers
- Turning your computer off at the Power Point when you finish using it for the night to save power. Otherwise computers when just shutdown use approximately 5 watts of power doing nothing.
- When you’re not going to use your computer or computer equipment within the next 15 minutes. Turn them off.
- Don’t leave modems, scanners or printers on when not in use.
- Don’t keep your mp3 player or digital camera plugged in any longer than what is needed to recharge its batteries.
- Consider making your next computer a laptop. Laptops are much more energy efficient than PC’s even when plugged into the wall.

Monitors
- LCD flat screen monitors use less power than CRT monitors.
- Screen Savers do not save energy! Instead turn your monitor off when your going away from your computer.

Printers
- Inkjet printers use much less power than laser printers.
- Don’t turn your printer on until just before it is required for use.
- Use recycled paper for your printing needs.
- Print on both sides of the paper when appropriate.
- Recycle waste paper.
- Recycle or re-use printer cartridges when they run out.
- Consider sending a document via email rather than printing it then sending it via mail.

Others
- Don’t forget to switch your household lighting to compact fluorescent bulbs. They use 30% of the energy for the same light output and last more than 3 times as long as a standard incandescent bulb.
- Using rewritable media (CD-RW, DVD-RW, USB Thumbdrives etc) helps to reduce the amount of digital media being thrown away.
- Take your old computer to an electronics recycling centre rather than putting them into landfill.
