Abused swimmer loses out
By Todd Balym
March 28, 2007 UKRAINE'S Kateryna Zubkova competed at the world swimming championships today, less than 24 hours after police obtained an intervention order against her father on her behalf.

Zubkova won her 50m backstroke heat in 29.37sec, more than half a second faster than her entry time, but not fast enough to qualify for this evening's semi-finals.

Zubkova smiled to the small crowd after the race, but avoided reporters as swimming officials escorted her away from the media mixed zone at Susie O'Neill Pool.

Police last night obtained an order preventing her father and coach, 38-year-old Mikhail Zubkov, coming within 200 metres of her after footage of a physical altercation between the pair in the athletes' marshalling room was aired on television.

Police superintendent Mick Williams said the images were "disturbing" and police held concerns for the girl's safety.

Zubkova was interviewed by police last night and examined by a doctor, who found she was not injured, Williams said.

"The advice I've got is she was quite open and frank and did not hold back about what the incident was about," he said.

Zubkov was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

Swimming's world governing body FINA has revoked his accreditation and is making its own investigation into the matter.

Melbourne 2007 director Michael Scott said the incident was "unacceptable" at the world championships.

"It is unacceptable in Australia, it is unacceptable anywhere else in the world that sort of behaviour," Scott said.

"It is a very serious matter."

Zubkova is entered to compete again at the world championship in the 200m backstroke heats on Friday.
