Explosive sex revelations put rugby league in lockdown
Matthew Benns and Les Kennedy | May 10, 2009

RUGBY league players and officials are bunkering down today and bracing for the fall-out from tomorrow night's Four Corners program on the code's culture of group sex and sexual abuse.

NRL chief executive David Gallop refused to comment yesterday until he had seen the ABC's "Code of Silence" report, which comes amid a spate of new abuse issues including:

- The revelation that Cronulla Sharks NRL officials waited almost four months after star player Greg Bird glassed his girlfriend before calling him to task at a special meeting;

- Balmain Tigers refusing to reveal details of a "confidential" internal inquiry as Queensland Police continue to investigate allegations of group sexual assault by players on a mentally impaired 23-year-old woman last month;

- A Sydney magistrate condemning NRL footballers for thinking they were "a special class of people" while sentencing Sydney Roosters forward Anthony Cherrington to 150 hours' community service on Friday for bashing his girlfriend.

Even before the program has screened, popular league figure Matthew Johns used his presenter's position on Channel Nine's Footy Show to express remorse for having group sex with a 19-year-old kitchen hand in New Zealand seven years ago.

Johns's father Gary said yesterday: "We have been through it all before. It's in Matthew's best interests now that we let this all die down."

It is understood that the woman, now 26 and married, is distraught at the attention her individual case has attracted and is terrified her identity will be revealed.

She had described what happened to her in an anonymous newspaper interview immediately after the incident. It was published yesterday by the Christchurch Press. "They [Johns and another man] were the players, they started it off and they did lots of the main stuff, but then there were four other guys, five other guys c who did heaps of gross other stuff and they were just as bad as the other two," she said.

New Zealand police investigated the incident at the time and did not lay charges. The case will not be re-opened.

Keith Burgess, the woman's boss at the Racecourse Hotel in Christchurch, where the incident occurred, said: "She is the last person you expect to be involved in that kind of thing."

The Reverend George Capsis, who was chaplain to the Cronulla Sharks at the time, said he was aware of the incident but "the players didn't want to talk to me about it. I suppose they were embarrassed.

"I did try and tackle it with one of them - not Johns, another player - and he was pretty contrite about it."

Asked if he was surprised Johns was involved, he said: "I don't think I would like to answer that."

Mr Capsis said: "There were things that went on that were pretty unsavoury - stuff that went on that the club didn't know about that I know about as the chaplain.

"There were times when I would get a call early in the morning that someone was drunk and I had to go to the cops and clear it all up. It's been going on for years."

The Sun-Herald can reveal that officials from the Cronulla Sharks waited almost four months after Greg Bird glassed his girlfriend before calling him to task at a special meeting to discuss his public conduct before and after the assault.

At the meeting on December 4 last year, according to details in a police brief of evidence, Bird, 24, was asked to "show cause" as to why he should not be sacked. He was also quizzed over allegedly dropping a glass on the head of Victoria Shannon in a nightclub eight months before the attack on his girlfriend.

Bird faces up to two years' jail for cutting girlfriend Katie Milligan's face. He will be sentenced on June 22 and will be back in court two weeks later to face common assault charges on Ms Shannon.

The police brief included other examples of bad behaviour by Bird, who now plays in France.

In Queensland police confirmed that investigations "are continuing" into allegations that up to six players from the Balmain Tigers rugby league feeder team, Balmain Ryde-Eastwood, raped a mentally impaired woman on the Sunshine Coast last month.

Tigers chairman David Trodden refused to discuss the internal investigation. "I don't think that's any of your business," he said. "It is a matter that is confidential to the club processes and the people concerned."

SOO will be played as a 1 off 2 weeks after the GF for those not good enough to play the Four Nations...
