I know that sounds like stupid question, and with 5 grand slams to what, 12????, I realise that overall in his career he hasn't achieved what Federer has. BUT, having turned 22 a month ago, Rafa has five grand slams to his name. At the same stage of his career, Federer had one - with conceivably 8 or 9 years ahead of him, could Rafa overtake the Swiss? For the moment he seems to have his measure, and Djokovic is a massive chance of knocking him over on the hardcourts at the US Open - so at least in the short term the grand slam future of Federer looks not quite as rosy. That said, I have no doubt he will win a number of grand slams in the future. |

federer's greatest competition is himself. the real question is how many slams does it take before one expects you not to give a kcuf anymore? |

he clearly gave a fvck last night - he looked very upset not to win, and having watched as much of the match as my early start today would allow, there was no two ways about it - Nadal purely and simply outplayed him. In addition, should Nadal ever get to Federer's numbers, won't he be facing exaclty the same problem? |

there's the difference.....federer is doing it. many have gone off the rails by the time they were 24. nadal might, but history suggests federer is special |

I'm not sure about the question.. but isn't it great to see this rivalry, everyone said the greats always had a nemesis but not Fed so yea... It's funny to see the two players turn in dominance... with each year Nadal has been beating Fed in France easier and easier and last year almost beat Fed too in Wimbledon...changing of the guard? Now Nadal has to do well on hardcourts though to be up with Fed, because unlike Fed whos reaching finals of France, he's not getting high in Aus and US Edited by Mao, Jul 7 2008, 02:52 AM.

Federer is still King until Nadal can replicate the extraordinary seasons which the Fed express has had. But Nadal seems to be taking over as the best player in the world atm. |

I think people are writing off Federer too quickly. Nadal hasn't had close to one season like Federer has had over the last 3-4... |

technically he really has - the most titles Federer has won in a year is 12 in 2006. In 2005 Nadal won 10, which is obviously a few below, but is there and thereabouts. So far in 2008, Nadal has won 6 titles, two of which were grand slams, and there are a shitload of tournaments to go, so don't bet on him not emulating Federer. I do realise that Roger has accomplished heaps more so far in his career, but my point was that at Nadal's age, he hadn't done near as much. |

Take it easy mate, way too early to judge. You can't say Nadal will be better than Federer just because he has more grand slams at the same age! There's still heaps of water to pass under the bridge, I mean Hewitt looked like a world beater too at 19/20 and was no.1 at 20 or 21 wasn't he?? Who knows, Djokovic might come and become the next Federer and stop Nadal or Nadal might break a leg or something. Judge this after their careers are anywhere near comparable. |

Disagree, I watched the whole match and in the first two sets Federer outplayed himself really. He was just too mentally fragile. At the end of the match he had fifty-two, count them: 52!!, unforced errors versus 27 and also had probably over 80 winners! He just made too many mistakes to win that game though of course Nadal was relentless in keeping the foot on the throat as well hence his win. |

I know he didn't look himself - and I genuinely put that down to Nadal's pressure - a player as great as Federer doesn't end up playing every second point from metres behind the baseline because he has a brain-melt. I'm not in any way saying that Nadal WILL be better than Federer, but I'm using the only available info to speculate - that is all you can do. As good as Hewitt was going, he had no weapons, and never won more than one slam in a year so it isn't as though he was sweeping absolutely everything before him. |

Nadal won't last at the top for as long as Federer. I'm a big fan of Nadal but his style of play is far too physically intensive to be camped at the top of the world for a long time. These types of players (while still being around) don't usually last at the top. That being said Nadal has a better chance of winning all 4 grand slams then Federer. He's got the hard 2 out of the way and now he only needs the US Open. Federer still needs to win on clay *grimace*. |
