Who are your favourites from down through the years? Though the lack of genuine quality horses in Australia has dipped in recent times, I still look back pretty fondly on a lot of the stars of the 90s - ironically when I wasn't old enough to legally have a bet. My fave early on was Veandercross, and I jumped all over Nothin Leica Dane when it won the Derby in what, 94? before backing up and running 2nd in the Cup. I wasn't a big Saintly fan but looking back he was a farking superb horse. Might and Power will probably always be - along with Sunline - the best horse I ever saw. When he wantd to race he was simply impossible to beat. Undoubtedly my favourite of all time though was Northerly - could have had a real crack at absolute racing immortality if the handicapper hadn't given him 3.7 tonnes for the Cup after he took out the Caulfield and Cox Plate double. I think at weight for age, only Might and Power and Sunline could have beaten him at their best. Was never a fan of Octagonal - after a great 3-year-old season he seemed to stick to winning the minor Group 1s - like a Tie The Knot - gun horse but just short of legend status. Lonhro was better IMO. Of the good-horse but non-legend category I always liked Intergaze and Northern Drake - worthy Group 1 horses but not from the very top level. |

Octagonal is probably my favourite horse just in front of Sunline. I backed Sunline a fair few times and once when we were on a bucks trip at Rosehill. I remember as we sat there and watched it drift out for about 20 minutes. It was paying $1.40 on tote and this one bookie kept letting it drift out. We waited and waited and waited until he put up $1.90 about 20 seconds before the race jumped. We had all put in money together and hammered it and it won (not by a lot though) so we were pretty happy. |

Grand Armee was another I bloody loved. I liked those horses who had genuine Group 1 pedigree but didn't get all the wraps of some of the other stars. |

I backed Makybe Diva the first 2 times it won when I was overseas so it has a soft spot in my heart. I remember waking up at about 4am in Ireland to watch the race and woke the missus up as I was cheering her home. I got decent odds that time but in Scotland I only got 7/2....tight bastards. |

I'm not sure why but I never warmed to Makybe Diva - partly cause Freedman held the VRC to ransom over the state of the track, and partly because she never quite proved herself against the absolutely brilliant crop of horses that came just before her - not her fault obviously but yeah. |

Macka said his favourite horse is now Viewed in front of Bauer and C'est Le Guerre after he had those in his trifecta. |

Only started winning Group 1's because of other horses retirements. |

Yeah, his six-length smashing of Lonrho in the QEII Stakes showed he was a class below the rest. |

Lonrho was at the end of his career and not the horse he was in his prime.. |

I can relate to most of what you mentioned in your original post Phat.....brought back some good memories....I also backed Nothin Leica Dane in the '95 Derby....was even more bittersweet as a mate of mine was a huge Occie fan and we both unloaded on them and he was close to tears after the race. Might and Power is probably my all time favourite though....I backed him in the Caulfield Cup of '97 when he won by about 6 lengths....paid about $9 and I doubt you could get anywhere near that price for the remainder of his career. A few other faves that probably aren't as well known are Juggler, Our Maizcay, All Our Mob and Chief De Beers. |

Good ol Chief De Beers.......if you backed him in a race with Wayne Wilson calling you knew exactly what the horse was doing every stride as he loved that bastard. Pity it couldn't run anywhere else but Doomben. |

Northerly owns this thread full stop. What a champion, not the best of win-loss records but by gee he lifted when it mattered and refused to be beaten. |
