Hawthorn has busted the 30,000 members barrier before Christmas for the first time.

The Hawks claims they are the first Victorian AFL club to do so.

Hawthorn has signed up 30,087 members already, an increase of 57 per cent on the same time last year.

The Hawks say 22 per cent of those people are new members as the club enjoys a new-found popularity after winning its first flag in 20 years.

The club is now eyeing last season's record membership of 41,686.

"The team has shown over the last few seasons that there are exciting times ahead for the club and it is encouraging that so many supporters have backed the club as financial members," president Jeff Kennett said.

He said the Hawks were committed to becoming the first Victorian club to have a membership base of over 50,000.

Mr Kennett said the club is still on the rise in Tasmania.

"Tasmanians continue to get behind the club with 3,753 members already signed up for the 2009 season, of which 29 per cent are new members to the Hawks," he said.

Why should the AFL intervene in the Renouf issue? The AFL didn't intervene in the Johncock carry on. They finally acted after many many incidents involving Eagles players and most of time the same players and it now is history that they caused a player to be sacked who was not charged or found guilty of anything.

The only way to prove that is a player has to test positive three times and that allegedly hasn't occurred yet.

to be fair gardiner got in a touch of trouble pranging cars drunk, kerr thought he was jean claude van damme, however if i recall correctly some other clubs have a similar if not worse record if we take out the issue of drug tests which dont exist until 3 positive tests.

Can't help but wonder how many 4-legged Members have signed, in the "true" Hawthorn tradition.

My outdoor pond saw two of the fish give birth, which has increased the number from 14 to around 60 (they move too fast to count properly)...this might account for 50-odd of the Hawks increased tally this year, and I love the big pile of gift shop vouchers and lanyards I've suddenly got by being such a willing participant of the "Member-Get-Member" scheme, but I reckon a fair few of those other 30 000 members would be actual people...

30,000 members?. Hawthorn are affiliated with tasmania so would this be a head count or body count?

It's a penis count, hence the word "member"...but yeah, in NSW this is often confused with a head count...
