So, for what it's worth, here's my combined XI, one I'd back to beat any other side drawn from any era in Test history. Even the one listed directly beneath it, at least five of whose constituents would have to give way if this particular selection committee merged the teams.

Australia-West Indies XI: Gordon Greenidge, Matthew Hayden, Vivian Richards, Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Adam Gilchrist (wkt), Shane Warne (capt), Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Joel Garner, Glenn McGrath.

Rest of Time XI: Sunil Gavaskar, Len Hutton, George Headley, Don Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Garry Sobers, Keith Miller (capt), Alan Knott (wkt), Dennis Lillee, SF Barnes, Muttiah Muralitharan.

seen both era's in the flesh.

haynes
langer.
ponting
richards
s waugh
gomes
gilchrist
warne
holding
marshal
mgrath
12th lara

i picked each for the position they played in, i took langer as a Wiley fox crucial to team harmony fielding and tactics and someone that mae haydn.
punter is a number 3
richards a number 4
ghomes was a lower order batsman who dug the windies out of holes numerous times, i took s waugh as bit more of everything llyod was.
haynes i feared him more, thought he ofered more than just opening like langer than grennige, i took grennige as a bully not someone who could bully.
gilly makes sny team anytime, better than bradman as a wicky as bradman was a run scorer.
it was hard choosing between mgrath and garner, fecking hard but mgraths in your face attidude won over.

I saw Clive Lloyd hit a ball over the old Clem Jones stand at the gabba onto Stanley street.
Same day he hit another ball into the old score board on (4x hill) and the ball was still going up! Would have gone out of the ground as well.

I'd have Steve Waugh in ahead of Ponting.

Isn't it interesting that those 2 sides dominated cricket for so long without a great all rounder.

I know that, which is why I said "great all rounder."

Malcom Marshall was the closest thing they had to an all-rounder.
