2009 NFL Draft

Normally I'm not that interested in the nitty gritty goings on of the NFL draft. But this year I'm fascinated in seeing what the Detroit Lions do, coming off the back of a dire 0-16 season. They have so little talent, they need help everywhere. So I'm curious what the new coaches do.

With the #1 pick, do they go with QB Stafford ? They need to make the most of their star wideout, Calvin Johnson. But having good offence means nothing when you find yourself down 21-0. And is Stafford really going to be a franchise QB ?

The Lions couldn't stop anybody. The consensus best player available is linebacker Aaron Curry. But he's not a middle linebacker, and do you pay a guy big money, and use the #1 pick on a position that doesn't make a lot of impact ?

Lions fans want the team to pick a franchise left tackle. Their O-line does suck. And no point having a rookie QB if he spends all his time on his back. But Eugene Monroe's knees are a question mark, and Oher and Andre Smith's stock has plummeted of late. Baylor's Jason Smith is inexperienced at LT, being a converted tight end. He's come out of nowhere, so there's no surefire answer at left tackle.

I think they'll need to go Stafford at #1, use their 2nd 1st round pick on best cornerback available, the #33 pick on a defensive tackle like Evander Hood. There should be some value in the 3rd round for them to pick up a left guard and a linebacker.

Noone knows who the Lions will draft not even themselves at the moment but most draft experts have chosen they will pick Stafford like you suggested as Culpepper obviously isn't the long term answer or prolly even short term answer.

They are luck to have a few first rounders to help with depth.

Very funny.

I think a tight end in the 3rd round could be a good option for them. Coffman could be available there. Gives them another receiving option and fills the void at tight end.

If the Lions don't go for Stafford which i highly doubt, mostly like they will go for OT Jason Smith.

i honestly think they should trade down

they need alot of young talent, 1 player won't get it done

They need a franchise QB tho...I doubt Sanchez will stay on the board too long either. After that the depth is pretty low

no good getting a franchise QB if the team has no line, no defence, no running game and only one reciever

it could be another joey harrington (or alex smith :( )

Nobody wants the #1 pick in a year where there's no consensus superstar. Best player available is probably Curry and nobody wants to pay an unproven SAM linebacker that kind of money.

They have 2 1st round picks, a high 2nd pick (33 overall) and 2 3rd round picks, so should be able to fill some holes immediately. Its not like they're expecting to be in the Superbowl next season.

Their current left tackle Backus is on the books for 2 more years and is making a shitload. So its a lot of salary to take on at one position.

Not sure Smith is the best LT either as I pointed out in my OP. He's only had 1 year at left tackle. A bit like how people are hyping the defensive end Michael Johnson. Sure, he's a freak athlete but where was a year ago ? Johnson was on the bench as a junior and Smith was at tight end. A big call to make.

NFL.com - Despite reports that the Lions are looking to negotiate with their unidentified first overall pick, general manager Martin Mayhew says the team is open to trading the pick.

"We're open to all options with that pick," Mayhew told NFL.com. "Obviously, it has value to us, and if it has value to somebody else, then we can talk about that."

One option could include using the pick to get Jay Cutler from the Broncos.

In other words......show us what you got

I doubt many will give much up for the number 1 pick due to the guaranteed money commanded them them these days.
