Lleyton Hewitt has won his first clay court title in 10 years, beating American Wayne Odesnik in the US Men's Clay Court Championship final in Houston.

Hewitt won 6-2 7-5 in just over two hours at River Oaks to claim his first ATP Tour title since 2007.

The former world No.1 was 18 when he last won a tournament on clay, back in May 1999 at Delray Beach, which was just his second of 27 career titles.

Hewitt is the first Australian to win the US Men's Clay Court Championship since Jason Stoltenberg, who took home the title in 1994.

The two-time grand slam champion's last previous title and previous final was in Las Vegas in 2007.

"This is what all the hard work is for, to play weeks like this and have this kind of feeling at the end," said Hewitt, who is working his way back from left hip surgery last August.

"It makes going through the surgery and all the hard work worth it. It's good stuff."

Certainly the victory left Hewitt eager to tackle the clay courts of Europe.

"It's a big day to win a clay court event," he said.

"I feel every year I'm getting better on clay. Now I'm looking really forward to the French Open. With a good draw I think I can do some damage there."

his ranking will still be shitty so hopefully he wins a bit more before RG to get a decent draw
