F1's latest controversy is the diffuser situation. Today, the FIA decides whether williams, toyota, and brawn have to re-desgn their car and get 0 points from the first 2 races.... or whether the 7 teams not using the design are allowed to.... http://www.planet-f1.com/story/0,18954,3213_5187619,00.html seems like an interesting start! |

"THE diffuser fitted to championship leader Jenson Button's Brawn GP and two other teams is legal, Formula One's ruling body says. The long-awaited Wednesday verdict confirms Button at the top of the driver standings after sensational wins in the season's first two races in Melbourne, Australia and Malaysia. The ruling came after a five judge FIA Court of Appeal panel sat on Tuesday to hear complaints that the diffuser fitted to the Brawn, Toyota and Williams cars contravened the sport's new technical regulations. The appeal against the aerodynamic device fitted to the back of the three teams' cars was led by Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault. Wednesday's verdict confirmed an original ruling given by race stewards in Australia that the diffusers were legal. A statement issued by the FIA on Wednesday confirmed the designs on the Brawn, Toyota and Williams cars did "comply with the applicable regulations''. The FIA decision will come as a major relief to Ross Brawn, the man behind Brawn GP, and Button, who were in danger of being stripped of their points if the appeal had been upheld. During Tuesday's heated session at the FIA's headquarters at Place de la Concorde, Brawn was described as "a person of supreme arrogance" by Ferrari's legal representative, Nigel Tozzi QC. Brawn countered, telling the court that his team's diffuser was merely "an innovative approach of an existing idea". Red Bull already re-designing their car as they beleive it will be THAT much better.. i find it Helmut Marko's comments interesting... http://www.planet-f1.com/story/0,18954,3213_5192672,00.html "What angers us is the fact that we had approached Charlie Whiting for a clarification on a diffuser solution like the one in question and we were told it was illegal, therefore we did not pursue it any further though our design team had similar ideas" I wonder if this is true. |

While I dont know the full details and actual wording the laws governing the diffusers, the FIA would have had a riot on their hands if they had voted them illegal. The main area of revolt that would concern Bernie et al would be the fans reactions. A banning of the diffusers would have been seen as another way of protecting the 'big boys' and this would have turned a number of fans off. In a year that has already been governed by major cutbacks in corporate spending, to annoy the remaining fans would not have been wise. Added to this I am absolute positive that a techincal genius such as Brawn would have known exactly how far to push the envelope and the other teams whinging does seem to be a case of sour grapes. |

Well, i have read the transcipt for todays FIA thursday press conference. Rubens, Jarno, Kazuki, Mark and Heikki were the 5 drivers present. They are all happy the decision has been made, and life can get on. On another note: Mark said the Red Bull is staying 'the same' in terms of development for the next 2 races at china and bahrain but when they return to Europe for Barcelona and Monaco they will have "massive upgrades" on the aero, drivetrain and rear of the car that he hopes they will challenge for wins. |
