Matthew Richardson will miss the next 10-12 weeks after scans showed a torn tendon in his right hamstring.

The Richmond veteran had been plagued by a buttocks injury going into the weekend's loss to Sydney Swans, but this is believed to be a new injury.

He will require immediate surgery to repair his injured right hamstring.

The bad news means Richmond will be without one of their veteran leaders until at least round 16.

Fox Sports AFL expert Gerard Healy hinted in a newspaper column at the weekend that Richardson, 34, would find it difficult to retain his spot on the Richmond list when, as expected, a new coach was appointed to replace the under-fire Terry Wallace.

Healy told foxsports.com.au moments after the news of Richardson's injury broke that it could leave him with just six weeks left in his decorated career at Punt Road.

"A new coach is going to come in and he will want to rebuild from the ground up with young blokes," Healy said.

"Every club needs to have hope and for so long Richo has signified the hope of Richmond. But, at 34, that's not going to keep Tigers fans going for much longer.

"The only way to rebuild is with the kids these days."

Healy wrote on Saturday that Richardson was one of a host of senior players at Richmond likely to be left out in the cold at season's end.

Nathan Brown (31 years old), Ben Cousins (30), Troy Simmonds (30), Joel Bowden (30), Kane Johnson (31) and Richardson are all in the final year of their respective contracts

That's a big blow for Richmond and I think it's time for Jay Schulz to step up now.

Schulz has had his chance and hasn't taken it. If Hughes has done ok at Coburg he should get the chance to take it otherwise Post or Gourdis should be given the chance.

Hopefully Richo can make it back at the end of the season for a couple of farewell games.
