Mark Webber fifth-fastest in practice for Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona

By staff writers
May 09, 2009

Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber clocked the fifth-best time in the opening practice sessions ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, two places better than Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Nico Rosberg, meanwhile, continued his dominating practice form to record the fastest time in both sessions, followed by Williams teammate Kazuki Nakajima.

Spain's dual world champion, Fernando Alonso, was third-fastest for Renault ahead of Brawn GP's Rubens Barrichello, Webber and Brawn's world championship leader, Jenson Button.

Rosberg clocked a fastest time of 1min 21.588sec around the Circuit de Catalunya track, with Nakajima less than 0.2sec behind.

Rosberg has now set the fastest lap time in eight of the season's 13 practice sessions, but he has picked up only 3½ points from racing.

Ferrari, off to the worst season's start in their 60-year history, continued to sit way off the leader's pace despite an array of aerodynamic upgrades.

Kimi Raikkonen was more than a second behind Rosberg, but ahead of teammate Felipe Massa.

Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton posted a fastest lap of 1min 22.809sec to be 1.2 seconds off the pace.

Improved performances by Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld in the morning session were not repeated in the afternoon, the BMW Sauber pair finishing more than 1.3 seconds behind the Williams cars.

Wooooooo... Webber third....

Brawn 1-2.... but a brilliant drive by webber.

started 5th, stayed 5th for the opening stint and then suddenly lost 5 seconds at the first pitstop... watching it live i thought he made a typical error or had some bad luck with traffic, but turns out he put an extra 8 laps of fuel on board and come the second round of stops was 2 seconds per lap quicker than massa and vettel and turned a 8 second deficit into a 7 second advantage.
he then closed up to the brawns and was just 1 second behind barrichello.
he got onto a good strategy and drove hard. his best race i think.

also of note was his pass on alonso..
after the safety car at the start, alonso passed mark down the straight.... and i still dont know how he didnt smash alonso up the rear but mark cut from the right to left under brakes and did one of the best passes i have seen in ages. it effectively stopped him from being blocked by fernando....

and ferrari.... not giving felipe enough fuel. 3rd and 4th all race, and lost 30 seconds in 4 laps in order to get to the finish. and then ran of fuel at turn 3 after the finish.

Woo hoo!

Could this be a good season for Webber, or do you see the other teams improving soon?

Good race and that pass on Alonso was simply awesome!! Good to see the Bulls doing well and for Mark to miss the first corner mess. Normally he would be tangled up in that!!!

Ferrari are a joke and heads need to roll. That is pathetic that they miscalculated the fuel and combined with last years fvckups its obvious that they need to get a manager who knows what he is doing. Funny that ever since Schuey has been on the wall that their management has suffered. I am not saying he is the reason as he is more of a driver manager but it could be more than coincidence!!!

The red bull still has some good upgrades coming soon too....
if the double diffuser works for them they may have it for the next round at monaco or definately turkey in 4 weeks.
plus some more upgrades to aero.

at the moment they have similar pace to brawn (maybe 1-2 tenths per lap slower in critical stages) and are ahead of their nearest rivals.
brawn havent got huge upgrades as their budget is small...

mcalren are going backwards....
ferrari improved dramatically in 2 weeks... but reliability and silly mistakes still plague them.

the only 2 teams to run Kers consistantly have been renault and mclaren...

ferrari did for 2 races... then stopped for 2... then put it back on at spain....
bmw abondoned it early.

at this stage, the cars are not developed enough to chuck a 50KG battery and system into a car that needs to come in at 605KG including the driver.
as it not compulsory this season, i dont see many teams using it.
