Bernie Ecclestone has revealed a second American team is looking to join Formula One next season.

US F1 announced its potential entry earlier this year, although confirmation of that will have to wait for the political row between the current teams and the FIA to be resolved.

With Ecclestone now announcing a second US team is waiting in the wings, it will prompt speculation regarding such giants as Penske or Andretti Racing Green.

"There's two American teams," confirmed Ecclestone at the launch of a Formula One credit card.

"It will be good to see some new faces. Something like that (a change) is always good."

"When you think about it, who would have thought we would be talking about Brawn and Red Bull the way we are talking about them now."

However, before any new entrants are confirmed, the battle of the budget must be settled.

Motorsport's world governing body confirmed a 40-million-pound ($AU 79,291,100) budget cap will be in place for next season but, given the regulations, there are fears it will spark a two-tier F1.

The teams are seeking talks with FIA president Max Mosley in a bid to clear up the situation, but with seemingly little time to do so as they have to confirm their entry for next year by May 27.

Until such time as the issue is settled, new names such as Lola, Aston Martin/Prodrive and US F1 are in limbo.

Ecclestone is convinced an agreement is coming, adding: "We're trying to save them (the teams) from stupidity."

"All we're simply doing is trying to reduce the necessity to spend to be competitive."

"They can pay the drivers what they want, have bigger motorhomes, but we don't need them to spend money on racing unnecessarily."

Ecclestone has also again defended Ferrari after Mosley recently remarked the sport could live without it.

"I don't think he (Mosley) meant what he said. He was just having a go at (Ferrari president) Luca (di Montezemolo) a little bit," said Ecclestone.

"It's one of those things where Formula One is Ferrari, and Ferrari is Formula One."

"It's just a marriage made in heaven, one of those super things that works well."

"He's a bit disappointed they are taking a silly attitude."
