A couple of weeks ago I said that Australia needs to start treating T20 as a seperate game to Test and ODI cricket. Watching Offsiders this morning Gerard Wheatley has basically said the same thing and has nominated a team and coach. I think this has merits, pick Warney as the coach enabling him to start growing for the national Test side later in life. Pick Haydos, Gilly and Symonds in the team to help coach the young stars and because they are cutting it in T20 cricket. (Symonds perhaps not but without the structure he will come back to form). The rest of the side should be based on a T20 style, with players like Warner, Hodge, Hussey etc and bowlers who can play in T20. The worst bowlers in the WC are all from Aust........ This also has a postive affect on the Test and ODI sides who can concentrate on the longer and more serious forms of the game. We may not take T20 as seriously as we should, by admitting it is here to stay and focussing specialist effort into the game we will improve across the board. Thoughts? |

I agree with you to some extent but what makes you think you can pick 2 players who have retired from international cricket and another who has made it clear that he is not prepared to put his team before his personal routine? You can't just pick Gilchrist and Hayden because they can still play ok - if that was the case Darren Lehmann would still have been a walk-up to the Australian ODI side in early 2008. They have retired - move on. Aside from that though, yes, I agree with you that they need to specialise in T20 a lot more. |

Because Haydos and Gilly still play T20. They have retired from Australian Cricket which is primarily because they stopped performing at the highest level in Test cricket. We dont have a structure which suggests that you can move from the Test arena to T20 version of the game but going forward i think we should. This enables young players to interact with super stars of the game, to be mentored and start honing their international skills. Players have a better chance of playing T20 to an older age as it isnt as taxing on the body and the scheduling permits more time off away from the game. In my opinion if we dont get on the front foot with this we will be left behind by the rest of the world. My suggestion is a total paradigm shift, but I think it has some merit. |

Jayasuriya is still in the ODI team as well. i see what you mean Meljas but i think it would be a backward step to actually entice players out of retirement for that reason - maybe just ensuring that in future, retiring players use T20 as the step down. |

If you can support it going forward then whats wrong with Gilly and Haydos? Is it just the fact they signed a pice of paper stating they had retired or do you think they are not up for it? |

To some extent I don't think they're up for it (IPL is not THAT high a standard), and secondly, it just takes away altogether from the credibility of the format if you deliberately go chasing players who have explicitly said that their international cricket playing days were over. |

Kinda i do, for T20 u need free spirit players who just go for it and have no real attached pressure on em ...always fearing of losing ur wicket in t20 wont get u anywhere |

Thats the point, if they had the opportunity to keep playing they may not have retired all together. And as the standout batsmen of the IPL I think they are more than up for it. If it wasnt for the player depth in this country we may not have forced them in to retirement. |

two words on IPL form. Shaun Marsh. Where the hell has he gone? hayden admittedly did look pretty impressive but yeah, I don't think IPL form holds a lot of water at this stage. |

Puddle is injured i think but yea - what a gun theres lots of young fishes =] T20 is kinda dodge though, like you have to get use to it... not the most skilled players win..or talented eg id bank Vics to beat that Aus team, since they know what to do Edited by Mao, Jun 14 2009, 02:13 AM.

I genuinely believe Hayden retired too early, but understand why he did given the high expectations this country sets and the mass of talen coming through that deserves a go. I would have no problem with Haydos playing T20 and I reckon he would carve it up for another 5 years if given that opportunity. We need to reset the standards by which we have identified the requirement to retire. It doesnt apply anymore given the new format of T20. Also, 2 years ago the players were complaing about having to play too much cricket. Since then we have no added T20 as well. Good reason to have the 3 national teams imo. Whether we like it or not T20 has changed the game and the infrastructure required to support the game for ever. |

Hayden and Gilly shouldnt feature in any Aussie T20 squad. IPL is full of unknown Indians, washed up former stars and other stars just in it for the money. IPL form = nought. |

They would still be in the top 20 players in Australia. They onyl retired due to the standards we have and the depth. If they were Bangladeshian they would play until they were 80 or died of starvation. |
