Dean Laidley has stepped down as coach of struggling AFL club North Melbourne.

The Kangaroos have endured a torrid season in 2009, winning just four of their 12 matches so far, and kicked just three goals in the 44-point loss to Adelaide Crows on Sunday.

It appears Laidley has jumped before being pushed. The club was reviewing Laidley's position and had agreed to let him know whether he would be retained next year by round 16.

"We've come to an agreement," Laidley told the Herald Sun on Tuesday.

Laidley, who was appointed in 2003 as Denis Pagan's replacement, becomes the second coaching casualty in the AFL this season after Terry Wallace and Richmond parted ways earlier this month.

The Kangaroos often punched above their weight under Laidley, who led the club to three finals appearances in six full seasons in charge. North's third-placed finish in 2007 was their best result under the 1996 premiership player.

Laidley coached North in 149 games for 72 wins, 75 losses and two draws.

The 42 year-old has maintained he wants to continue coaching beyond 2009, even if he was not at North.

The Kangaroos have called a press conference at their club at 1pm (EST) on Tuesday.

Second coach to go this year.

Straight to the Tigers given his top 8 record. Should sort them out.

Anyways. A Laidleyless Kangas is very sad. He and Harvey are the Kangaroos.

That sucks. Laidley was a slightly grubby player at times but he was a shinboner through and through, and as a coach he has been the most open, calm and modest guy imaginable despite doing some impossible things with the ordinary lists he has had to work with.

If Richmond take on Laidley they may as well have kept Wallace.

I doubt he will coach though he will head the way of Balme and be football manager.
