DYNAMIC Pakistani batsman Shahid Afridi will be targeted as NSW's foreign import for next season's domestic Twenty20 competition, after leading his country to glory in England. NSW will approach Afridi to join their ranks with the intention of qualifying him for the lucrative Champions League Twenty20 tournament in 2010, but he could also be used in the Sheffield Shield. Afridi, 29, guided Pakistan to their first major cricket title in 17 years when they defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the World Twenty20 final at Lord's on Sunday. Afridi smashed an unbeaten 54 off 40 balls, his second consecutive half-century, to confirm his reputation as a big-match performer. A Cricket NSW official said Afridi would bring experience and significant ability to the Blues, and the big-hitting star would also be considered for first-class and one-day games. "He is clearly one of the world's best Twenty20 players, but also he would be a valuable addition to our dressing room, our young players would learn a lot from him," the official said. "We would certainly consider if he could be used for other formats." If the deal transpires, Afridi would become one of the highest-profile players to join an Australian side, and it would follow NSW's selection of Kiwi Brendon McCullum for last season's Big Bash final against Victoria. Afridi would be enticed by the prospect of acclimatising to Australian conditions before Pakistan's Test and one-day series against Ricky Ponting's team from December 26 to February 5. Due to the threat of terrorism in Pakistan, their national team has been left with a scant fixture list - having to organise all home games abroad. They have no tour games between August 12 - a Twenty20 clash in Sri Lanka - and the Boxing Day clash at the MCG, although they will be involved in the two-week ICC Champions Trophy tournament in South Africa from September 24 to October 5. It leaves an opportunity for Afridi to represent NSW in all three formats. In a memorandum of understanding, Cricket Australia announced an extra $50,000 for states to lure overseas players. It hopes to raise the profile of the Australian tournament as the IPL and Champions League take ascendancy. Afridi would heighten interest in the Big Bash if he played. Regarded as the world's most attacking batsman, he scored 129 runs in his final three innings at the World Cup with a strike rate of 148.27 and was the force behind Pakistan's victory. "Afridi knows he's a great cricketer, his captain, Younis Khan, said, "He's a match-winner and he's been fantastic for us." NSW qualified for the Champions League to be played in India from October 8 to 23 , a tournament with a $US6m ($7.45m) prize pool involving the world's top 12 domestic teams. Afridi could not qualify for this year's Champions League because he did not help NSW qualify. :yeah: |

Only Watto I bag. he doesnt cost a cent. Looks like he has fallen over again in England  Boom Boom will be okay for the T20 stuff because he cant boom boom anymore in the other formats. I havent been on the McCullum bagging wagon on here. The other states will all get imports for the t20 games no doubt. |
