I don’t think that was the issue. There is no way I would believe he is ashamed of his nationality. From what I gathered he was not happy that his nationality (and possibly other personal details?) had become a topic of discussion when he wanted to keep some level of privacy. Was it worth leaving? That's for nobody but him to answer.
