Its all been sorted....
No break away series....

The FIA and FOTA have agreed to no budget cap... but they have agreed that teams will reduce costs further over the next 3 years....
So 13 teams (26 cars) on the grid at the start of next year

As with any other politic battle, sanity normally prevails once the chest beating dies down.

Both Bernie and FOTA knew a breakaway wasnt going to feasible to anyone so this outcome was always going to happen. It was purely a political dance to give each side a sense of purpose and strength. I would very much like to see the real details about the agreements rather than the headline act of 'budget caps'. I would really like to know if FOTA are going to get the money Bernie is holding back from since at least 2006!!!

There has never been any likelihood of salary caps but team budget caps were a strong desire of the FIA. The proposed cap of 40 mill pounds has been removed and all that has been released to the public is that both the FIA and FOTA have agreed to reduce costs to appriximate 'early 1990's levels' within 2/3 years. Read into that what you may. Personally, I think its a bit soft diplomacy banter but we will wait and see.

Personally I think a salary cap is a good idea.

40 million pounds should have been enough to provide a good specticle for the fans, and a reasonable constraint for the teams.

by golly, how much does a team spend these days?

While travel costs were to be covered by the FIA under their proposed budget cap of 40 mill, all else iincluding development and race weekend costs were not. Galahs, you are dreaming if you think 40mill a season is a viable budget for teams. It costs somewhere between 10 to 20 mill per race on operating costs alone. A fully built car is around 2 million pounds. Apart from trying to run a worldwide series on a shoe string there is also the question of employees and their wages. The budget cap would have placed a large number of workers on the dole lines. The cap was ridiculous to be considered in the first place.

This in light of Real Madrid spending nearly quarter of a billion euros on 4-5 players!!! Sport always blossoms in times of economic downturns and the spending in football along with the fact F1 is next biggest sport shows the code is not nearly as cash strapped as Max would make you think it was. It is purely a political manoeuvre to involve more privateers. However, if you want to run with the big boys you need to have deep wallets. Red Bull and Brawn have shown this and have proved if you get the right staff and resources you can still compete against the Ferrraris and McLarens of this world.
