State of Origin Elegibility

Not this old chestnut I here you say…I would like to have a discussion on a couple of issue’s
-Under State of Origin rules, players are selected for the state in which they first played senior (or registered) rugby league. Players must also be eligible to represent Australia at an international level.

What does or ‘registered mean’. A kid registers for a team in under 8s..is that what they mean.. or if not what is considered senior football.. A bloke can play ‘A grade for bush teams when they are as young as 14..surely this has to be the first place that the law makers need to address…what is senior football.

There has been many players who have fallen into the Gray area as they call it…Greg Inglis the most recent….as far as I’m concerned he qualifies for NSW…..he himself disagrees and says he is proud the wear the Maroon Jersey.. Crockler and Thiaday were both born in NSW..not sure what there pedigree is after that. Falou as well but he moved to the Ipswich area as a kid so he is fine
What about Billy Moore… many people say that Billy ‘Queenslander’ Moore is a NSWelshman…he was born in Tentifield….that is correct but what complicates Moores situation is that his parents lived in Wallangarra…Wallangarra is split with most of the town being in Qld… and a small part over the railway line being in NSW…the closest Hospital was a toss up between Stanthorpe and Tentifield….his old man chose to drive to Tentifield …which side of the line was Billy’s dad when he emptied his sack…?. His parents say his is Maroon through and through.
Adrian Lam was allowed to play for Queensland as a special matter. it was during the Super League war and the ARL new that they needed to provide a competitive State contest to get brownie points over SL. And Qld had few to pick from… But he certainly does not fulfill the second part of the criteria… ‘Players must also be eligible to represent Australia at an international level.’
Any player who made their grade debut with the Brisbane and Gold Coast sides of 1988 and 1989 qualified for NSW because the competition was run by the NSWRL in those two years before coming under the umbrella of the ARL…Brisbane and Gold Coast each fielded A, Reserve and Under 20s in these early years in the National Comp.
What about Chris Johns…born and bred in Brisbane..but played for NSW after being signed by St George

Ken Negas played right up to reserve grade for Wests Bundaberg before being taken south to sign with the raiders…plays for NSW..when clearly he is a Queenslander
And whilst talking about the Raiders…they are based in ACT. that’s not part of NSW the last time I looked . Yet Clyde Mullins and Stuart who started their careers there qualified for NSW. But I’ll pay this as the ACT was ceded to the Commonwealth to stop the fighting between Sydney and Melbourne over who had the right to be the Capital of Australia

Steve Rogers is a curious one. He played his Junior and first senior games for the Surfers Paradise Pirates….The Pirates and 3 other Queensland teams played in the NSW Group 18 comp.. therefore he qualified for NSW
What about this simple rule change to clear up the confusion and ensure we have no more Ingliss’s and Negas’s.
To qualify for origin you must first be qualified to play for Australia.. that part is simple ...then ..where did the player live the majority of his years from age 0 – 16…once that is qualified. they then swear their loyalty to that State; If a player was born in WA and moves to NSW after age 16 he qualifies for NSW as an example… so its an easy calculation

Interestde to hear your thoughts girls

It is a mess and probably always will be. You cannot make it the state you were born in as people like Inglis, Sterling etc would be playing for sides they felt no affiliation for, but there does need to be some hard and fast rules applied.

Most would accept that an U18's comp is likely to be the first real year of 'senior' football, but complications can arise when players as young as 15 or 16 are snapped up by NRL squads and put into their development programmes. Personally, I think 16 years old is the best age to draw a line at, but that also comes with a grey area - The Raiders (a NSW team despite being mostly based in the ACT) are fed by a team in the QRL. Does that mean a 16 year old from Junee, under contract to the Raiders, plays for the South Logan Magpies and is a Maroon for the rest of his life?

If it is not sorted soon, the next generation of Origin players will be diluting one of Origins greatest traditions "Mate against Mate".

Might leave this little gem alone. It's like turning up to a gun fight armed with a plastic duck. NRL??!!?

Simple. If you are soft and struggle at the basics.. then you get a blue jersey.

The rest can get a Maroon jersey.

Maybe they dont allow that now..but blokes like Tony Obst played A grade in Longreach at 14 in tne 7s

And I'm sure there would be a lot of others who played A grade at an early stage in the bush

Only blokes like Lockyer and Price would have experience that out of the current crop of players. The rest would be too young.

Lockyer played A Grade for Cities when he was 15
