Bennett starts with basics Phat, he doesnt want them to put teams away yet. Did the same thing with the Broncos when they started to bleed out the exceptional class players to retirement.

NSW need Soward, says Sailor

By Ian McCullough AAP Sat, 04 Jul 2009 15:50:24
St George Illawarra winger Wendell Sailor says Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward is the man NSW are crying out for if they have any chance of preventing a 3-0 State of Origin whitewash against Queensland.

Soward was in inspirational form against Sydney Roosters on Friday, scoring two tries and kicking five goals to help his side to a 34-12 victory and consolidate their position at the top of the NRL ladder.

The display left Sailor in no doubt the 24-year-old should be named on Monday in the NSW side in the final match of the series in Brisbane on July 15.

The 34-year-old former dual international winger scored his ninth try of the season against the Roosters and said he owed most of them to Soward.

"I think Jamie has given me about seven of those tries and we have a good combination going out there on the that side," Sailor told AAP.

"He is going tremendous at the moment and I think people have to respect he has put in a lot of hard work to get there.

"He has been kicked a lot of times, been told he is not that good, told he is soft and it shows his mental attitude is strong to get where he is now."

Sailor, who played 14 times for Queensland, also believes NSW need someone like Soward to give the Maroons something to think about as they look to complete a 3-0 series whitewash in Brisbane.

"At training he has been a cheeky little five-eighth," Sailor said.

"He has got that X-factor and those are the players you want to be around. He's got a good mind for the game, he reads it very well and if I wasn't playing with Jamie Soward I would be at home watching him myself.

"He is the type of guy you pay to see. I thought next year would be his time, to be honest, but I really think now he and Brett Morris can handle Origin.

"I know it is two steps up, but you are never going to know if he can unless you try him. NSW needs X-factor at the moment, someone to match Thurston, Lockyer and Billy Slater."

Sailor has enjoyed a remarkable return to the NRL following his two-year ban for testing positive for cocaine which ended his rugby career and said he would relish the chance to play for one more season with the Dragons.

"I am enjoying being with these boys, they give me good ball and give me a reason for being back in the game," he said.

"And also the fans, I love running out there and having my name chanted, we all have big egos and it is great!

"It is up to the Dragons and if they want me next year now. I am happy to go around again but it depends on who they sign and how much money they have in the kitty.

"I don't want massive money and I don't want to stand in the way of some of the young blokes, they have re-signed Brett Morris which I am really happy about so we will wait and see what happens."

Newspapers saying Barrett and Killer.

Deadset. Are NSW selectors that stupid ?

Killer will go OK. Called for it at the start of the Origin. Barrett over Soward is a joke. Trent is good yet Soward is miles ahead on form.

This is the twilight zone - I agree wholeheartedly with Macka.

Barrett brought one thing to 5-8 in game 2 - solidarity. However not once in teh blue jersey - or with Cronulla recently - has he threatened to do anything gamebreaking. If Barrett was a Queenslander he'd be perfect, he could just do his job and let the brilliant backs work off him. But NSW don't have that luxury - they need a game breaker at 5-8. I can't argue with Soward getting a go, and I think Campese should also be ahead of Barrett in the pecking order as well. He has really found some of his best form in the last few weeks.

One thing I am interested to know from those who have watched all St George's games recently (I've watched probably 2/3 of them this season). Has any team come out with obvious intent to target Soward? Obviously every forward pack runs at him, but has any team really sent guys out to try and rough him up while he has the ball, smash him after kicks etc? From what I've watched no-one has, in his current form at club level it may be the only answer to stopping him.

Haven't you seen how much the refs have been looking after kickers lately??

I don't mean doing it illegally - I mean Steve Price style whereby the team basically nominates someone who's sole job on the 4th and 5th tackle is to sprint out of the line and go after him, with the rest of their team-mates under instruction to cover for that player in terms of filling his spot in the line, rather than just waiting until the last tackle and then having whoever is closest make a token attempt at a charge down.

Soward played dead once. He got a penalty 10 out from his own line. LOL.

They could smash him, however anything late or a touch high and you'll get penalised and maybe 10 coz Jamie milks every one for all they are worth.

PS. Soward is very toey. He usually gets out of the way or around the slower players when they go for a good hit. Then makes another 10 or offloads to someone who makes another 10 or in some cases races away with only the fullback to beat.

Yeah I know, that's obviously the risk you take but as i said, if you go out there with your game plan based around having that one player nominated to do the job, and you actually work your defensive plans around the fact that he will be out of the line on those last tackles you could probably cover it.

Just anothger string to his bow. I'd have him in there for kicks. As good as JT.

One or more repeat sets and I'd be backing Hayne or Jennings to cross.

Not like you to tell us who you're backing before the event mate.

Ok, so the selectors blew it.

A great chance to mix youth with experience. Soward and Kimmorley.

Talk about multi tasking. Deadset the NSW selectors must be same as the Roosters recruiters.

NFI.
