Gold Coast United don't want TOO many fans

Gold Coast United will defy a Football Federation Australia directive by carrying through with their plan to cap home crowds at 5000.

In a controversial cost-cutting measure that has already provoked a bitter backlash from supporters, United fans will be locked out of Skilled Park on Saturday night when Robbie Fowler's North Queensland Fury visit the glitter strip.

Their money-saving plan was revealed on August 20, but the club was initially scared off the scheme by Football Federation Australia. However, the Coast's billionaire backer Clive Palmer revisited the idea last week, giving Stadiums Queensland the necessary 10 days' notice that the crowd-capping project would take place this weekend.

United CEO Clive Mensink said the plan would also be implemented for the Coast's home clash against Sydney FC on November 7.

"We know the FFA are disappointed, but we'll keep going with it until we see an increase in interest from fans," Mensink said.

A-League boss Archie Fraser issued a "please explain" notice to United.

"The FFA is reviewing its options in response to what the club is doing," Fraser said.

"We have written to the club and pointed out that what it has proposed does not fit into the parameters of their original ticketing program that was submitted to the FFA.

"Capping ticket sales is not in the best interests of the club, the A-League, football or the people of the Gold Coast."

United are averaging crowds of 5621, with their biggest attendance of the season coming in round two when 7526 watched the hosts thrash the Fury 5-0.

By capping the crowd at 5000, United aren't required to pay a state government transport levy of $3.15 a ticket.

United will also save money on stadium staff by opening just one stand and not having to implement a traffic plan because of the 5000 cap.

The players' frustration with the club's attitude was apparent in their shocking performance in Sunday's 6-0 loss to Wellington.

talking about this is the a-league thread. kcufing joke

Be looking at under 2k for the game on the weekend.

It such a negative move IMO and really looks like they have given up on the crowds.

They could have really pushed for a decent crowd this week against the Fury.

Maybe there would be more interest from fans if the cheapest tickets weren't like $50 each.

Titans tickets are in that price range too.

Soccer Australia must be fuming to put up a fight on what's going to become a key battleground.

Bizarre.

2616 was the crowd last night. As expected.

Some fans protested the crowd cap by going and sitting in the closed stands.

FURIOUS Gold Coast United fans vented their spleen at billionaire owner Clive Palmer's controversial crowd cap at an almost empty Skilled Park.

While Palmer capped attendance at 5000 to save operating costs, locals showed their displeasure with only 2616 turning up to watch Gold Coast play fellow A-League expansion club North Queensland.

Many of those were even more infuriated as only one of four stands were open.

The Coast's most hardy fans, "The Beach", protested the mining magnate's plan to save himself $100,000 throughout a scoreless first half in an eery atmosphere.

Brandishing banners which read "Scrap the Cap", "Fans Not Dollars", "Cap is Crap" and "Want fans? Ask us how", the supporters group, decked out in yellow lifesavers caps and shirts, also chanted "stop the cap" and pointed at Palmer's private box.

Palmer, one of Australia's richest men and valued at $5.5 billion, ignored a Football Federation Australia directive by limiting the attendance after averaging less than 6000 for the new club's first five home games.

The iron ore baron argues he is ensuring the longevity of his "glamour club" and appears headed for a showdown with the FFA in coming weeks.

The first time the teams clashed at Skilled Park, in round two, a crowd of 7526 watched as Gold Coast annihilated the Fury 5-0.

Last night, Fury turned the tables to win 2-0. There was just nothing for the home crowd to enjoy.

Good to see the crowd protesting this ridiculous decision.
