To predict how the World Cup draw will pan out, you need membership of MENSA combined with the black arts of the Kremlin. Fifa say they won’t decide how to rank the 31 teams – hosts South Africa are automatically seeded – until two days before the draw on Friday week, and no one would be surprised to see them make up a brand new rule book. We do know it will be a combination of rankings AND previous World Cup form AND geography, but which is given primacy is anyone’s guess. But here’s a few crucial facts. The rankings used will be October’s, when Australia were 24th and had 12 other qualifiers below them. Brazil were the top ranked nation then, but France and Portugal were below the top seven. South Africa, to repeat, will be seeded, as host nations are. There’ll be four “streams” for the draw, with the top pot made up (we assume) of the top seven in those October rankings (as they all have good World Cup records), plus South Africa. So that’s Brazil, Spain, Holland, Germany, Italy, Argentina, England + SA. The second stream will be the other eight European nations (we assume). Then what? It could be mainly geographical – so Asia’s four, plus New Zealand and the Central/North Americas in Stream Three, and finally Africa and the rest of South America. OR it could be more on rankings – so Australia in pot 3, plus possibly North Korea and NZ in pot four. So the best case scenario for Pim Verbeek is South Africa, Greece, New Zealand. The worst case – Spain, France, Ivory Coast. Now tell me what you think. |

Not sure why it would be a dream group?* The only real football rivalry we have is with new zealand. The others are 'whatevs' in terms of football rivalry. Rarely play England and I can't remember the last time we played the USA. And I'm so bored with the USA...** I'm not sure if we will be placed in the same pot as Uruguay but facing them would stir up a few feelings. Italy too. *No need to explain. I'm just not one of those people who swoons over australia playing it's conqueror and other colonies/former colonies. **Get it? |

Considering they are highly likely to be in the same pot - very doubtful combo. We'd thrash them anyway. |

I just know a lot of yanks so want to play the USA on a more personal level. Beating England is just such a good feeling in any sport, even though they probably don't really consider us as much of a rival in football as say Germany or Argentina. |
