Karrie Webb secured her fourth women's Australian Open title when she nailed a birdie putt on the second play-off hole to clinch the tournament at Kingston Heath in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon. Webb beat Ji-Yai Shin on the second play-off hole after pegging back a two-stroke deficit after 15 holes. Both Webb and Shin hit final-round scores of 67 to finish the tournament at 8-under the card, four strokes clear of their closest rival Melissa Reid of England. Korea's Amy Yang was a further two strokes adrift after a fourth-round score of 70. Shin surged to the lead early in the back nine with birdies on the 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th holes. She held her form with three pars to finish with a 5-under-par 68 and went into the clubhouse with a 2-shot lead. But Webb drained a 10-metre putt on the 16th to move within a stroke of the lead and birdied the 17th to draw level. She had previously bogeyed the final hole on her second and third rounds but held her nerve to par and take the tournament into a play-off. Both players had three-metre putts for birdie on the first sudden death hole but had to settle for par and a trip back to the 18th tee. And Webb took advantage of good green position after her second shot to hole a birdie and wrap up the tournament. Webb was visibly relieved after claiming her 45th career title after a longer than usual break from the top. "I'm very happy to be standing up here, it's been almost a year since I've made a victory speech - I guess the old girl still has plenty of petrol in the tank," she said. The world number three also praised the efforts of Shin who Webb admitted forced her to dig deep into her bag of tricks. "When I got to the 18th green I hadn't seen the leader board for a while and I was quite shocked to be two shots behind, so I had to put myself into another gear," she said. |
